“The appetite of the lazy craves, and gets nothing, while the appetite of the diligent is richly supplied.” Proverbs 13:4
Laziness is something everyone struggles with. Laziness has also become something that really bothers me. In other posts I have talked about apathy and discipline - read those they go along with this one. Being home for the summer and having some more time to relax made me think more and more about all the laziness I see in life, from myself and others. When I am at school it’s the people who for some reason cannot pick up their trash. I’m not sure why, they just do not do it. At home, my family and I are all guilty of it. It takes maybe an extra ten minutes to wash the dishes, but we all complain when we have to. I don't know what it is but sometimes I will not do something that take extra 10 seconds just because it requires a little bit more effort.
In case you don't know, laziness is: “the quality of being unwilling to work or use energy; idleness.” With all the technology available to us, being lazy has become so easy. I would say there are even new unbelievable ways people can be lazy. I once heard someone say they weren't going to download something, because it was too much work going to the app store. God has given us the time and talents we have, and yet, we are too lazy to use them. I think it’s a fair bet that most of us want to be great. Most of us want to do great things. Hopefully most of us want to be saints. The saints are a good example of why we should not be lazy. I heard once that John Paul II only got 6 hours of sleep every night. The saints would go that little extra step for someone else, for God. John Paul II would use that extra time to pray. I cannot tell you how times I have been “too busy” to pray. That’s me being lazy.
Have you become so lazy you don’t pray? Or maybe you become so busy you can’t spend ten minutes in the chapel on your way home? I know that is the excuse I use. I know a lot of the time I complain about things, things I want to see change, things I could probably change myself, but I don’t because I'm too lazy.
“I'd be more frightened by not using whatever abilities I'd been given. I'd be more frightened by procrastination and laziness.”
God has given us so much, but we often waste it. Why? Because we just can’t get ourselves to act. It is time to start. I truly think anyone can do anything if they put their mind and time into it. Stop being lazy. Start with the small stuff. Maybe start with putting the dishes away or finishing the laundry. Give that extra effort. It will almost always make your life more enjoyable, if not your life, then someone else’s. Go out of your way for someone else. When it is the hardest to do, that’s when you should do it the most. If you truly want to be great at anything, you cannot be lazy. You have to practice, you have to act, you have to give that extra effort.
Just my thoughts
