I was listening to a talk the other night by a guy who converted to the Catholic faith. He was talking about his conversion story and how he kind of owned it to one of his friends who just asked him one question. His main point was we need to be careful about we choose as friends. He said that the people who you currently spend time with will have a huge impact on who you will become in 20 years. I think it would be more accurate to say that the people we hang it with now represent the person we are now. Letting ourselves conform and pick up habits of those we hang out with has a significant impact on who we will be in 20 years.
I have seen in my own life that this can be very true. When I hang out with some people, I start to change the way I talk and even joke. I know that these jokes aren’t good for me, but they just become a habit when I am around these people. Even if I like these people, I can only hang around them a little bit at a time because I know that when I am with them I am not being my best self. I am not making choose that would lead me to Heaven.
I know that I have written a lot about friendship because friendships mean so much and I can clearly see the value in friendships. I see that we are who we hang out with. So when I find people that are going to help me become the best me, then I don’t want to let that go. Also, when people come in to my life that I can help become better versions of themselves, I want to be there for them. This post isn’t going to be long, but I just to say just how important it is to have people in your life that are going to call you out in the right way at the right time. These kind of friendships can be what saves us from ourselves. Sometimes you just need someone to tell you that you are being dramatic, sometimes you need someone that is going to ask you if what you are doing is good for you. I think we need friends that are going to love us past our mistakes and help us grow from them.
