Garden

Cause fear has stolen all my sleep”

This is a line from one of Needtobreathe songs. I know that I have written so much about Needtobreathe. That is because I honestly don’t think there is a band that is as good as them. I think they are very honest and authentic in their music. I am working on becoming more authentic myself. Anyway, this song is called Garden. I have probably heard it hundreds of times. I thought I knew what it was about. However, I just recently got something more out of it.

“Won't you take this cup from me Cause fear has stolen all my sleep If tomorrow means my death I pray you'll save their souls with it”

This is the first line, and this is clearly from Jesus’ perspective in the garden of Gethsemane, when He is taking on all our sins. This first line manages to say so much. “Take this cup from me.” From the words that Jesus was praying we can tell that Jesus did not want to feel all the pain he did. He says, “Not MY will be done but yours.” Jesus suffered for you! Out of love for you, He took on all of your sins, and suffered and died for you! This is huge, you should never forget you are worth dying for. I thought this this idea of Jesus suffering for us was the main idea of the song. However, after thinking about the next part more deeply, I began to think differently.

“Let the songs I sing bring joy to you Let the words I say profess my love Let the notes I choose Be your favorite tune Father let my heart be after you”

I think that this part represents a prayer we should be saying and may be even something we should be asking. (Though I could be wrong, and this part of the song could still from Jesus’ perspective). Let the songs we sing and the words we say profess our love for Christ. He died for us. Everything we do should profess our love for Him. What are the songs you are singing? Are your words speaking truth in a loving way? We can’t do this ourselves, we need the help of the father. “Father, let my heart be after you.” We need to let our hearts be after Him. What is your heart after? I know for me, I often get confused and I think my heart is after other things like money, fame, or even lust. I need to ask the Father to help me only seek Him. “Father Let my heart be after You” and nothing else.

“In this hour of doubt, I see But who I am is not just me So give me strength to die myself So love can live to tell the tale”

I am not really sure what this line is trying to say. My first thought is that in that hour temptation, it may not just be us. The devil can use our weakness to tempt us to fail. Another idea is that in the hour of temptation we realize that we can’t do it alone. We need the Lord to guide and helps us. We need to ask him to help us to know that we would be nothing without Him. My last thought is that it could also be that we need to have people around us. We need our friends and we need to serve others. We must die to ourselves. Either way, our love for other and the Lord should tell a tale of great love.

Just my thoughts if you disagree let me know.

GO with God!

Duncan.
